50 Years of CAFOD

On January 27th, 4 lucky students were chosen to visit the CAFOD headquarters in London and take part in many fun activities. Martha Watson, Sophie Jedrzejczak, Ronan Pollard and Daragh Connolly, accompanied by Miss Coyle and Ms Manifold visited Romero House, the new CAFOD headquarters in London.

When we arrived we were greeted with drinks and biscuits, as well as many other young people, gathered there from across the country. We then split up into groups and had a guided tour of the building, which left us all wanting to go and work there in the future, and Miss Coyle wanting to work there immediately!

We then had a talk from Denise, a woman who met CAFOD whilst working in Africa with her husband who was a teacher. After a filling lunch, we once again split into groups and started to learn about the work CAFOD does in other countries, such as Africa and Latin America. We then had a short break to attend workshops which we had signed up to. The girls attended a session on the media and how to use photography and video to raise awareness. The boys attended a different workshop which was about advertising and emergency responses – both sessions were really informative and we felt we had learned lots.

Later in the evening we were introduced to a special guest speaker from Indonesia. He was a man who worked for Carinas which is the Indonesian equivalent of CAFOD and he was certainly interesting to listen to. Following this we had some relaxing social time whilst eating pizza – this gave us a good opportunity to share what we do for CAFOD in our school with other young people from around the country.

It was an amazing experience where we learned lots of valuable things about the brilliant work that CAFOD does, and we also met lots of other Catholic children just like us!
