Peru

We are privileged to have connections with Fr Jonathon Hart from the Diocesan Mission in Peru. Fr Jonathon has been in Peru. The Mission has been established for some years now.

In answer to an appeal by Pope John 23rd, the then Bishop of Leeds the Rt Rev George Patrick Dwyer sent two volunteer priests to go and work with the Columbian Fathers in the rapidly growing barriadas on the north side of Lima, a district called San Martin de Porres. In total 11 priests from Leeds have been on the Lima mission.

1969
The first Sisters of Mercy from the Leeds diocese went out to work in the newly established Parish of SS Peter & Paul and later also in the parish of Our Lady, Mediatrix of all Grace.

During this time with the aid of contributions from groups and individuals of the Leeds diocese as well as the annual Advent collection a variety of projects have been supported including the construction of churches, two clinics, a school for the Deaf as well as a centre for people with special educational needs.

In addition the diocese has made possible the establishment of a craft centre producing work that supports some 70 families. Help has been given to various communities to help them install water, light and sewage services in their neighbourhood.
We were able to hand a cheque for over £700 to Fr Jonathon on his recent visit to assist the mission in Peru. We look forward to forging further and stronger links on the future.
